Rovers Ladies found their goalscoring touch as they defeated Hull City 5-0 to book their place in the 3rd round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
A brace from Ella Toone and strikes from Jess Holbrook, Natasha Fenton and Faye McCoy ensured the ladies began 2017 in fine fashion at Bamber Bridge.
Despite the eventual scoreline, Rovers were slow starters at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium with little between the two sides in an even first half.
However right on the stroke of half-time Rovers grabbed the all-important opener. A speculative effort from distance by Holbrook took a slight deflection and that took it beyond the Hull keeper and into the bottom corner of the goal.
The start of the second half saw Gemma Donnelly's side quickly impose themselves further, doubling their advantage on 48 minutes.
A great piece of skill by Saffron Jordan released Lynda Shepherd on the right wing and her cross found Toone unmarked in the middle and she lobbed the keeper with a first-time shot.
Boosted by that second goal Rovers went in search of more with a flurry of chances as Toone fired wide and Danielle Whitham and Shepherd both rattled the frame of the goal.
But it didn't take long for the third goal to duly arrive, Fenton with a fantastic 30-yard strike to put clear daylight between the two sides.
Toone added her second and Rovers' fourth with an expertly taken free-kick on 74 minutes, before substitute Fay McCoy completed a fine afternoon's work with a headed goal four minutes from time.
Rovers' reward is a home tie against FA Women’s Premier League counterparts, Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, in the 3rd round on Sunday 5th February 2017.
