Talking targets

4 August 2017

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray believes his side will need to reach the 90-point mark if they are to achieve their aim of promotion from League One.

As Rovers prepare to take on Southend United tomorrow in their opening game of the 2017-18 season, the manager feels they need to get an average of two points a game to be successful.

Mowbray also knows that for it to be achievable, they need to find the back of the net with regularity, and hopes the side will be able to get over 80 goals.

"There will be no excuses come Saturday, we are playing for points and we know we are going to have to get 90 points if we are going to get promotion," said the manager.

"That is what our target is going to be so we need to start putting points on the board as soon as we can.

"I haven't set specific targets, it is just me saying what I think. The history books tell you roughly what you have to get. You roughly have to score 80-odd goals and get 90 points.

"We won't sit there and say 'lets get so many points out of the first five games' or whatever, we'll go out and try to win every game if we can.

"Somewhere down the line we are going to lose football matches, I think day one of any season there are always some strange results because the adrenaline levels are so high of every single player.

"I don't think it really matters whether you are at home or away on the first day because of the intensity. Every manager has had a six week build-up to the game so there's no stone unturned, everybody is hugely prepared, nobody is carrying knocks, everybody understands the game plan and so you get very tight games on the first day of the season.

"As it unfolds and the games come every Saturday and Tuesday then hopefully the quality of the teams with the best players will come to the fore."
