Richie Smallwood knows Rovers have to learn from last Friday's loss at Carlisle United when they take on Southend United this weekend.

The Rovers went down 3-1 to the League Two side in their final pre-season friendly before Saturday's season opener at Roots Hall.

But the summer signing from Rotherham hopes to use the performance as a 'reality check' and get the campaign off to the best possible start.

"You have your bad days and your bad nights and when you do you can only learn from them," said the midfielder. "We will certainly do that.

"They are the types of games that we will need to pick points up from on the road this season.

"It was a good reality check for the lads but we’re all looking forward to the season and hopefully we can get our first away win of the season.

"It’s finally here, the lads are looking good, fit, and we all can’t wait."

Tickets for Saturday's match at Southend are currently on open sale. Pricing details can be found here.
