Missed chances prove costly

28 August 2017

Rovers' Under-18s slipped to a narrow 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

Billy Barr's young side enjoyed much the better of the play throughout, but were unable to make the most of the opportunities that came their way.

Their wastefulness would prove costly as Wolves grabbed the only goal of the game ten minutes from time through Austin Samuels.

Callum Wright, Andy Jackson and Ben Paton had all travelled to Southampton with the Under-23s the night before, but there was no sign of fatigue as Rovers started the match brightly at Brockhall, with two chances in the opening two minutes.

Louis Khoury flashed an effort narrowly across goal, before Ben Paton received a pass from Ben Donnelly-Blackburn inside the six-yard box but was unable to beat the keeper.

The visitors then struck the crossbar with their first attack of the game, the strike taking a vital deflection as it rattled the woodwork.

Rovers ended the half strongly with the best chance falling to Jack Vale who forced a fine save from the Wolves keeper.

The second half saw the visitors change their shape and that took the young Rovers some time to get back into the ascendency.

Vale again had the best of the chances when played in on goal, but he failed to beat the keeper.

And those missed opportunities would come home to roost when Wolves grabbed all three points ten minutes from time.

A deep free-kick wasn't dealt with and Samuels snapped up the loose ball to clinch the victory.

"I was happy with the way we played apart from the result obviously," said Barr.

"We probably should have won the game, I thought we dominated it, especially in the first half.

"But we were guilty of a lack of quality at times in the final third, whilst their keeper made some good saves. Then we get done by a sucker punch at the end.

"But the important thing to learn is when you are on top, you don't give them chances.

"Football-wise we are more than happy with the way the lads have started the season."
