A mower-mad Rovers fan is set to embark on a unique charity challenge - and hopes to become a world record holder to boot!
Andrew Maxfield, who has been a regular at Ewood Park since 1974, is attempting to ride from John o' Groats to Land’s End... on a John Deere lawn tractor.
Andrew, 48, and his daughter, Kathryn, 23, will set off from the most northern point in Scotland on July 25th and hope to complete the 900-mile journey to Cornwall within four days.
"Originally, I organised a charity ball for December and I was looking for auction items," said Andrew, who is a season ticket holder in the Ronnie Clayton Blackburn End.
"I have an interest in lawnmowers. I cut the grass in my village and own eight lawnmowers myself. I thought I would write to John Deere and ask if they would be willing to donate a ride-on mower for our action. I offered to ride from John o’ Groats to Land’s End and they took me up on my offer. They are quite excited at the prospect and said it’s the first time they've actually helped a member of the public who wrote in.
"The world record stands at four days 23 hours, so we’re hoping to beat that. It’s a 900-mile journey and the mower goes just short of 10mph, so we’re going to be travelling continuously, 24 hours a day, in six-hour shifts. It’s going to be very difficult, but hopefully we can do it in less than four days. It's just going to be a case of whilst I’m not driving I’m going to be sleeping and vice versa for my daughter. Hopefully the weather will be nice as well!"
Andrew hopes his epic effort will raise over £1000 for Alzheimer’s Society - a charity very close to his heart - and he is appealing to fellow Rovers fans for support.
“My dad, who has also been a Rovers season ticket holder, is 77 years old and has suffered from Alzheimer’s for the last 12 years,” Andrew added.
“He had a fall at the beginning of December and became very frail, so we thought it might be his last Christmas. So in 2017, we decided to raise as much money as we could for the charity to try and find a cure.
“If anybody wants to donate, they can visit www.justgiving.com/Andrew-Maxfield
or text MAXF80 £3
. Initially we wanted to raise £1000 from the charity ball alone, so anything over that is a bonus.”
