We didn't deserve that

21 September 2016

Elliott Bennett felt Rovers didn't deserve to lose last night's EFL Cup tie at Leeds United.

The game appeared to be heading towards extra-time until Chris Wood struck for the home side with six minutes remaining to send them through to the fourth round.

The midfielder believed that there was little between the two sides and that the result was tough to take.

"As a team we are bitterly disappointed to lose the game," Bennett told Rovers PlayerHD.

"I don't think there was much in the game at all, we had a few chances, they had a few chances. Neither team created anything what you'd call clear-cut have to score opportunities. So I thought we were destined for extra-time until we got caught with a sucker-punch.

"I honestly don't think we deserved to get beat, especially with the manner of the goal, David Raya didn't deserve that, I thought he was fantastic."

The Rovers midfielder, who made his return to first team action after injury, was one of nine changes to the side that had defeated Rotherham United at the weekend, but Bennett isn't using that as an excuse for the defeat.

He added: "I don't like making excuses, we all train together every single day, everybody knows each other, it isn't like the gaffer has got a load of strangers off the streets and said go and have a game. We all know each other, we know how each other plays now.

"Obviously it is difficult for everyone when there are wholesale changes but you can't make that as an excuse, Leeds made changes as well and that is just sometimes the way it is."

Rovers are back in action this Saturday when they travel to take on Derby County.
