Rovers Ladies progressed through to the second round of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup on Sunday after a 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.
Quick-fire goals from Lynda Shepherd and Saffron Jordan saw Rovers race into a two-goal lead, and although the visitors pulled one back, a second half strike from Kayleigh McDonald wrapped up the game for the home side.
The first half would prove to be action-packed with Rovers having the better of the play.
Immediately from kick-off Faye McCoy saw a header cleared off the line as Rovers earned their first corner of many.
The early pressure eventually told on 19 minutes when Rovers were awarded a penalty after Saffron Jordan was pushed from behind inside the box. Lynda Shepherd converted from the spot via the inside of the post to give Rovers the advantage.
Just two minutes later the lead was doubled. A smart ball through sent Saffron Jordan in one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and she made no mistake with an impressive finish into the far corner.
However almost immediately Forest pulled a goal back. A fierce cross struck the crossbar and Katie Lowder poked the ball home in the ensuing scramble.
There was little between the two sides in the second half until the final quarter. Natasha Fenton went close with a free-kick before Ria Montgomery rattled the crossbar from 25-yards after coming on as a substitute.
With the corner count now in double figures, Rovers finally made one count late on. Kayleigh McDonald rising highest to head home to send the Ladies through to the next round.
ROVERS: Hill, Bickett, McDonald, Cook, Flynn (sub Montgomery 46 mins), McCoy (sub Fenton 51 mins), Holbrook, Shepherd (c), Whitham, Rankin (sub Taylor 72 mins), Jordan.
