Blackburn Rovers Ladies returned to the top of the table on Wednesday night after a thrilling 2-1 win over Fylde Ladies.
Both teams were level on points going into the game but a pair of strikes from Faye McCoy either side of Danielle Young’s equaliser saw Rovers come out on top.
Rovers began the game brightly after an acrobatic effort by Kayleigh McDonald from a corner was cleared off the line, Holbrook would go close soon after.
25 minutes in and Rovers would make the breakthrough. A free kick floated towards the penalty spot saw goalkeeper Brown spill the ball, for Faye McCoy to poke the ball home.
With half-time closing, Rovers were aggrieved not to have a penalty. The ball came loose on the right before Danielle Whitham was rashly brought down in the box. The referee put his whistle to his mouth before changing his mind.
A frantic start to the second half could have seen several goals in five minutes. First of all Saffron Jordan was magnificently denied by Brown from close range, before McDonald would have an effort cleared off the line again.
Rovers would come back to rue those misses as Fylde would equalise from a set piece. Danielly Young’s low cross from a wide position evaded everybody and nestled in the far corner for the equaliser.
Faye McCoy was having none of it and on 80 minutes she rises highest and headed home a Rovers corner after beating goalkeeper Brown to the cross.
Rovers return to the top of the league with this win and face Nottingham Forest for the second time on Sunday. Admission £3 Adults, £1 Concessions, Rovers STH FREE!
