Rovers Ladies progressed through to the third round of the FA Women's Premier League Cup with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday.
It was the second victory in quick succession over the Magpies, having defeated them by the same scoreline in the league at the beginning of the month.
Alex Taylor proved to be Rovers' goal hero with a third goal in as many matches, her winner setting up a home tie against Loughborough Foxes.
Gemma Donnelly’s Rovers started positively, going close to making an early breakthrough on 9 minutes when Ella Toone skilfully turned her marker, but her effort was straight at the keeper.
However with the game played at a slow tempo, neither side would truly look like scoring until just before half-time when Saffron Jordan pounced on a fumble, only to strike the ball over.
The second half would see Rovers come out with real purpose, first Jordan rounded the keeper but couldn’t convert, before Toone’s lobbed effort bounced agonisingly wide.
Rovers continued to put pressure on Newcastle and felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Jordan beat her marker to the ball before being hacked down in the area, but their appeals when unheard.
But thankfully frustration soon turned to relief as Kelsey Pearson managed to cross before being clattered by the keeper. The referee played advantage and that allowed Alex Taylor to reach the ball and fire home what would prove to be the match-winner.
The Ladies then went close to doubling their advantage as Jordan rattled the post, but despite some late pressure from Newcastle corner kicks, Rovers defended well to see the game out to book their place in the next round.
