Ladies gain narrow win over Magpies

4 October 2016

Rovers Ladies ran out 1-0 winners away at Newcastle United on Sunday to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

In a close encounter on Tyneside, a stunning finish from striker Saffron Jordan was enough to secure all three points in Rovers' favour.

After a scrappy opening, the first chance of note fell to the Magpies. But despite being played in on goal Sophie Williams saw her shot brilliantly saved by Danielle Hill.

As the half wore on Rovers started to find some rhythm to their play with Jordan going close, before Emma Rankin had a shot tipped wide from outside the box.

Then Rovers were then left to wonder how they hadn’t scored as Jess Holbrook’s free kick was parried straight to Lynda Shepherd, but the Rovers captain was denied from point-blank range.

Rovers stepped it up in the second half, their higher tempo eventually leading to the opening goal on 57 minutes.

A corner whipped in by Holbrook was only half-cleared as far as Jordan and the striker fired home to give Rovers a 1-0 lead.

But that spurred the home side into action, Danielle Whitham having to clear a ball off the line from a corner.

And although Newcastle continued to pressure with a series of further corners, Rovers restricted their opponents to little in the way of any clear-cut chances, as they went on to claim all three points.
