Owen Coyle felt Rovers' cause wasn't helped by key injuries as they slipped to a 1-0 loss to Birmingham City.
Danny Graham, Corry Evans and Marvin Emnes all limped out of a tight encounter at St. Andrew's as Stephen Gleeson's strike just past the hour mark settled the match in the home side's favour.
The Rovers boss believed his side were the better of the two in the first half, but the injuries meant they were unable to raise their game in the second.
"It is disappointing because we felt we were capable of taking something from the game," Coyle told Rovers PlayerHD.
"In the first half we had a wonderful chance through Tommie Hoban with a free header and at half-time I thought we were well-placed to go and win the game.
"Then their keeper has made a wonderful save from Emnes at the beginning of the second half when it was 0-0, had that gone in it might have been different.
"But ultimately it was a couple of mistakes and we've lost a poor goal from our point of view. We had great possession but we've given it away and then we have enough people back behind the ball, but we have to track the runners into the box and the boy has finished it into the top corner.
"We certainly weren't helped by the injuries. Danny Graham was struggling at half-time and couldn't carry on, Corry Evans was the same and then Marvin Emnes was injured as well.
"So we had three substitutions that were enforced through injury which didn't help our cause.
"We huffed and puffed from that point on, and with the last attack we've thrown everyone forward but we just couldn't score. These are the fine margins.
"So we'll have the break, come back and look to get fresh and then look to capitalise on a run of home games coming up, pick up points and move us to where we want to be."
