Mixed news on the injury front

17 November 2016

Rovers could welcome back Derrick Williams for Saturday's home game against Brentford.

The Irishman has been out of action since sustaining a hamstring injury against former club Bristol City last month, but returned to training this week and could come into contention for the clash against the Bees.

But whilst Rovers are boosted by that news, they are likely to be missing Marvin Emnes following his injury at Aston Villa last time out, as well as Gordon Greer and Danny Guthrie who have both picked up knocks in training.

Hope Akpan misses Saturday's game after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season and serves a one-match suspension.

Speaking on Thursday the Rovers boss Owen Coyle confirmed: "The break has helped us in the respect that I'm hopeful Derrick Williams will be fit and available.

"The two week break has given him a chance for this Saturday.

"But we have picked up a couple of knocks as Gordon Greer is feeling a little problem with his lower leg so he is getting that assessed, whilst Danny Guthrie has tweaked his calf today, so again that is another one that we'll have to look at.

"Marvin Emnes was injured at Aston Villa so we'll give him until the last minute, but at this moment he is looking more likely to miss the game rather than play.

"We have already got long-term injuries with Elliott Ward, Adam Henley and Tommie Hoban, whilst Hope Akpan is suspended this week having picked up five yellow cards.

"Ideally, and any manager will tell you, we want a fully fit squad to choose from, but when it is taken out of your hands we've just got to work with what we have and make sure that from what we have available we get a team out there that can win, and we believe we can.

"There are one or two that are champing at the bit and knocking on the door in terms of how well they've been training, and given we do have a number of people missing then we have to maybe shuffle one or two in terms of different areas of the park.

"But having said they are all desperate to play for Blackburn Rovers which is a good thing to have."
