Rovers Under-18s’ seven-match unbeaten run came to an end following a 4-1 defeat away to Manchester United.
Lee O’Connor opened the scoring midway through the first half, before defensive partner Tyrell Warren headed home a second just past the half-hour mark.
Angel Gomes grabbed United’s third before the break and Aidan Barlow made it 4-0 just past the hour mark.
Rovers registered late on when Ethan Hamilton diverted a dipping corner into his own net, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.
“It was our worst performance of the season by a long way and rightly so we got beat,” said coach Billy Barr.
“From 1 to 11, we weren’t at our best, which is uncharacteristic of us. I think the biggest disappointment on the day was when we went 2-0 down, we lacked courage to get on the ball and make passes, and that’s something we need to address going forward.
“Some harsh words were said after the game, because we’ve spent a long time building up something good and very quickly it can come crashing down. Training has been good since and all the players will be on edge to see who makes the squad for our game away to Derby County next weekend, when hopefully we put things right.”
