Blackburn Rovers Ladies continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Bradford City Women at Bamber Bridge on Sunday.
A brace from Ella Toone and strikes from Lynda Shepherd and Ellie Cook saw Rovers stretch their unbeaten run to 12 matches in all competitions this season.
After Rovers' keeper Danielle Hill had kept the Bantams at bay early on, the home side started to find their feet, taking the lead at the midway point of the half.
An incisive pass saw Saffron Jordan played in on goal, and she unselfishly squared for Toone to notch her tenth goal of the campaign.
In no time at all the Rovers advantage was doubled, this time from the penalty spot. Faye McCoy was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area and captain Lynda Shepherd stepped up and cooly converted.
However Bradford continued to pose a threat with Charlotte Stuart hitting the crossbar just before the interval, and immediately after the break the visitors would get a goal they deserved when Lucy Sowerby fired home to half Rovers’ advantage.
But after Jordan was cynically brought down just outside the area Rovers took the score to 3-1 in their favour. Toone's initial free-kick was blocked, but Cook was able to get her head to the looping ball to find the back of the net.
In the aftermath, Bradford's Laura Elford collected a second booking for her protestations and was sent off.
With Rovers now playing against ten, Toone used the extra space run from halfway before unleashing a superb effort into the top corner from fully 30-yards for her second of the match, putting the game beyond Bradford.
But to their credit the Bantams continued to press and grabbed a consolation goal three minutes from time through Ellie Olds as the match ended 4-2 in Rovers' favour.
The win keeps Rovers at the top of the FA Women's Premier League North, three points ahead of Middlesbrough and with a game in hand.
