Rovers Ladies booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Premier League Cup with a 5-0 demolition of Loughborough Foxes.
A first senior goal for the hard-working Ria Montgomery wrapped up Rovers’ 11th straight win in all competitions.
The visitors came with the intention of frustrating Rovers and for the best part it worked, until a stroke of misfortune on 20 minutes saw Natasha Fenton’s cross headed into her own net by a Loughborough player.
Loughborough would go close to levelling before the break, first when Charlotte Cooper fired across goal, then she flicked a cross at the near post onto the roof of the Rovers net.
After the restart, Rovers’ quality and fitness would prevail. The excellent Fenton fired a free-kick narrowly over the bar early on, before Ellie Cook headed wide from a corner.
The second goal eventually arrived on the hour mark, and again through a Loughborough player. Ella Toone dribbled into the box before her driven cross was diverted goalwards by a Loughborough leg and the ball went through the keeper's legs.
From this point on, it was all Rovers. On 70 minutes, Fenton delivered a wonderful disguised cross to the back post, where Toone was able to poke the ball home.
Four minutes later, Alex Taylor continued her good form from the bench when she headed Kelsey Pearson’s cross past the keeper at the back post.
Finally, within 10 minutes of coming on the pitch, Montgomery completed the rout. Toone beating three defenders down the left touchline, before cutting the ball back for Montgomery to fire home her first senior goal.
Rovers take on Morecambe next week in the semi-final of the Lancashire FA Womens Challenge Cup.
