Defender delighted at winning return

22 November 2016

Derrick Williams was delighted to return to action at the weekend to help Rovers claim a vital three points.

The full back had been out of action for a month after picking up a hamstring strain against his former club Bristol City, but he was back in the side at Ewood Park on Saturday as Rovers defeated Brentford 3-2.

"I'm really happy," the Irishman told Radio Rovers. "Especially because after an injury in the first game you are always a bit wary about it, but I got through the 90 and even better we got the three points.

"At the start I felt nervous but as I got into it felt better so I'm really happy.

"It was a massive win, really big. I thought all the boys did really well, we battled until the end so it was good. Another win and we are right back into the mix."

In atrocious conditions at, the match couldn't have started any worse for the Rovers as they went a goal behind after just 33 seconds. However the defender was delighted with the battling qualities that the side showed to come back to claim the points.

"We like making it hard for ourselves at the minute so we need to stop doing that," he added. "But to be fair to us we came out and got 2-1 up so it shows how much character we have in this team. We try not to let things affect us and just go again.

"I thought it was a very open game, their goalkeeper has done well and made a few good saves, we could have had a few more goals.

"We did okay defensively in the second half to keep them out. We have conceded a few late goals so you always have that in the back of your mind. So we just had to try and keep organised and keep talking to each other and make sure that we were all in the right places and I thought we did that well.

"I thought the whole team did well in the second half defensively, we are happy that we did it and we can look forward to Newcastle now."
