Shane Duffy's involvement at Euro 2016 ended in disappointment after he was sent off in Ireland's 2-1 defeat to France.

It had all been going so well, as Ireland led 1-0 at the interval thanks to Robbie Brady's second-minute spot-kick.

Duffy also came close to doubling Ireland's lead just before the break, but headed Brady's free-kick narrowly wide of the target.

However, Atletico's Antoine Griezmann turned the game on its head with two goals in the space of four second-half minutes.

Things went from bad to worse for Ireland when Duffy was shown a red card for bringing down Griezmann as he was bearing down on goal.

The hosts saw the game out with relative ease to book their place in the last eight, where they will meet either England or Iceland.

Duffy, who was earning his fifth cap for his country, will now be given some extra time off before he joins up with his Rovers team-mates for pre-season.
