Rovers' development squad were given a tough workout on Saturday in a 4-1 loss away at Stockport County.
With the first team in action at Blackpool, it was a young side that took to the field at Edgeley Park, and they were given a stern test.
Damien Johnson's side were slow starters as the Conference North side put Rovers under plenty of pressure in the early stages.
It eventually told on 32 minutes when a ball upfield was nodded into the path of John Marsden, and as Ryan Nyambe lost his footing, that allowed the Stockport man to fire home at the near post.
Rovers responded through Joe Rankin-Costello who fizzed an effort over the bar, but on 39 minutes the home side doubled their advantage when Connor Thomson tripped Danny Lloyd in the area, and he converted from 12-yards.
The young Rovers worked hard to keep Stockport at bay in the second period, and as the half wore on grew more into the game to put the Hatters under pressure.
And they got their reward for their endeavours on 79 minutes when Thomson slipped in Lewis Mansell and he cooly found the corner of the net.
Boosted by the goal Rovers pressed for an equaliser, and it almost arrived on 85 when Nyambe's cross from the right picked out Mansell at the back post. The forward connected well with his downward header, but unfortunately it bounced down and up onto the roof of the net.
But with Rovers pressing forward they were caught on the counter mere moments later as sub Charley Doyle tugged down Josh Amis in the area, and Amis fired home the second penalty of the afternoon.
Any chance of a Rovers comeback was eventually put to bed just before full-time when County grabbed a fourth goal.
It was the pick of the bunch as sub Craig Carney advanced before firing a 20-yard effort that flew in off the far post.
Damien Johnson's side are back in action this Wednesday night when they take on AFC Fylde at Kellamergh Park - kick-off 7.30pm.
