Gunners test for U21s

5 January 2016

Rovers' Under-21s return to action after the Christmas break with a lunchtime league match with Arsenal.

Damien Johnson's young side ended 2015 in fine fashion, winning five and drawing one of their last seven league games, whilst progressing through to the last 16 of the U21 Premier League Cup.

But the young Rovers will be given a stern test of their credentials when they face the Gunners at their London Colney training ground. Arsenal sit two points and two places above Rovers in Division 2, with both sides having plenty of games in hand on the teams above them.

No first team players will feature in today's match, with Johnson relying on the young players that have served him well so far this season.

Sam Lavelle returns to captain the side after injury, whilst Academy midfielder Joe Rankin-Costello makes his first start for the Under-21s after his substitute appearance in the 2-1 win over Newcastle United last time out.

Dean Rittenberg and Modou Cham return to the squad after their respective loan spells with Chorley and Stockport County ended last month.

ROVERS: Crump, Nyambe, Carson, Tomlinson, Lavelle (c), Wharton, Green, Rankin-Costello, Mansell, Thomson, Rittenberg.

Subs: C. Doyle, Fisher (GK), Tanner, Cham, Joel.

Kick-off is at 1.00pm.
