Rovers Ladies defeated Nuneaton Town for the third time this season to progress through to the third round of the Womens FA Cup.

Goals from Lynda Shepherd, Amie Fleming and Ella Toone secured a 3-0 victory for Gemma Donnelly’s side, who will now be away to West Ham United in the next round on Sunday.

Shepherd opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a screamer that found the top corner.

Natasha Fenton twice came close to doubling Rovers’ lead, but her shot from the edge of the area rattled the bar and then she blazed over from 10 yards out with the goal at her mercy.

Just before the break, Fleming miscued her header from close range, but she made no mistake four minutes into the second half, collecting Jess Holbrook’s pass before firing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Rovers wrapped up the win on 71 minutes when Kelsey Pearson and Ainsley Strickland combined to tee up substitute Toone to score.

Manager Gemma Donnelly said: “We finally got the game on and it was evident early on that we hadn’t played in a while. We were a bit rusty for the first 15-20 minutes, but after that, we found our feet and the result was never in question.

“Even though we were only 1-0 up a half-time, it didn’t reflect the number of chances we created and we could easily have been three or four up by the break.

“It was a useful game to play ahead of our other cup games against Bolton and Sporting Club Albion and to get through without picking up any injuries was very pleasing.

“Kelsey Pearson made her full debut and didn’t look out of place, although she was rarely tested at the back. Ella Toone came on for the final half an hour and was equally exciting to watch and it was great to see her score with virtually her first touch. Both players are now off to California this weekend with England Under-17s.

“Our final change was an opportunity to see another of our youngsters from the Centre of Excellence, Ellie Cook. Although it was only brief, it was a decent run-out for Ellie, who looked very comfortable playing in the Ladies team.”

ROVERS: Hill, Pearson, Bickett (Cook 77), Flynn, Kinvig, Shepherd, Fleming, Holbrook, Johnson, Fenton (Strickland 59), Jordan (Toone 65).

Subs not used: Maher, Taylor.
