Key duo could return for Boxing Day

Owen Coyle hopes that the break between league matches will allow him to welcome back key personnel for the Boxing Day clash with Barnsley.

With nine days between last weekend's game against Reading and the match at Oakwell on Monday the Rovers boss has his fingers crossed the Charlie Mulgrew and Corry Evans could return for the games over the Christmas and New Year period.

A calf injury picked up against Preston has seen Mulgrew miss Rovers' last two games, whilst Evans was absent against Reading with a troublesome groin injury. But the manager hopes both will be available for the match against the Tykes.

"The break between matches gives us a chance to get one or two back," Coyle told Rovers PlayerHD.

"Charlie Mulgrew has responded well to treatment as part of his recovery but whilst we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, we he has a decent chance. We know how valuable a player he is and the qualities he has.

"Corry Evans had an injection the other day to try and really get him back on track with regards to the groin injury that he has had for the last couple of years.

"I think Corry is a terrific player but he only played 20-odd games for the club last season and we want to be in a situation where he's able to play every week. So hopefully that can do that and give him a chance of being available over the Christmas period.

"So it would be nice to get one or two back fit from injuries there's no doubt about that."

Gordon Greer is available once more after serving a one-match ban, but Jason Lowe starts a two-match suspension after picking up his tenth booking of the season against Reading.
