Rovers Under-23s return to league action on Monday night when they face Fulham in their opening match of the new Premier League 2 season.
It will be a tough start to their Division 2 campaign against a Fulham side that did the double over Rovers last year.
But development squad boss Damien Johnson has been pleased with the way his young group have performed in the summer friendlies, with the challenge now being to start the season well.
"The pre-season has gone really well and we've been delighted with the players with the work that they have put in," Johnson told Rovers PlayerHD.
"But it is all about the season starting and getting the games in so the Fulham game can't come quick enough.
"The preparations have gone really well so we'll go down there in good spirits for a good start.
"We have a good group, we know that, but we still have a lot to do in terms of their own development. We know a couple have pushed on in pre-season and been involved with the first team, and five or six of them went to Austria with the first team in pre-season for the training camp. So we know there are opportunities if they are good enough.
"They've shown really good application over pre-season and we just hope that they can kick on now that the season starts."
Monday's match takes place at Craven Cottage, kick-off 7.00pm.
