PL2: Stoke City 0 Rovers 1

29 August 2016

Rovers' Under-23s warmed up for this week's Checkatrade Trophy match at Fleetwood Town with an impressive 1-0 away win over Stoke City on Saturday.

A second half strike from Lewis Mansell was enough to give Rovers all three points in a Premier League 2 clash that they dominated throughout.

Corry Evans was a surprise starter at Harrison Park, the Northern Ireland international getting 45 minutes under his belt before linking up with his country this week. Whilst Wes Brown added experience to the young Rovers side once more, playing the full game in defence.

Boosted by last Monday's draw against Middlesbrough, Rovers started the match strongly, Mansell seeing a shot saved by the Stoke keeper, whilst a Connor Mahoney cross struck the post.

But despite controlling the game for long spells, it wasn't until the second half that Rovers got the goal their play deserved.

Damien Johnson's side were actually down to ten men at the time as Jack Doyle received treatment, but a cross from Mahoney was superbly controlled by Mansell before he turned and fired home.

Rovers went on to see the game out well with Andy Fisher in goal only having one routine save to make. The perfect preparation for their match against Fleetwood at the Highbury Stadium on Tuesday night.

"We were comfortable throughout," said Johnson. "We controlled the game and had to be patient waiting for our chance.

"Mahoney was a constant threat out wide and Mansell has taken his goal really well.

"It is pleasing to get another clean sheet, and we were much better on the ball than we were against Middlesbrough.

"It is good preparation for the match on Tuesday."
