Rovers' Under-18s put in a disappointing display on Saturday as they went down 2-0 away at Newcastle United.

In a one-sided match at Little Benton, Rovers rarely threatened as the home side ran out comfortable winners.

The Magpies went close early on when Callum Smith struck the crossbar, but Billy Barr's youngsters didn't heed the warning with Mackenzie Heaney firing Newcastle in front with a 22nd minute free-kick.

Rovers keeper Matty Campbell made two crucial saves to keep the scoreline down before the break, but just before the hour mark Heaney grabbed his second with a goal on the counter-attack.

It was only in the closing stages that Rovers posed any threat to the Newcastle goal, Stefan Mols seeing a headed effort cleared off the line the closest they came.

"We got what we deserved," said Barr.

"We were sharp in training on Friday, but on the Saturday we just didn't turn up, it was a bad day at the office.

"There was no fluency to our play and there was no threat in the final third until the final 15 minutes of the match. We have to do better."

ROVERS: Campbell, Jackson, Williams, Mols, Makinson, Jones, Pemberton, Wright (sub Evans 75 mins), Butterworth, Fawns (sub Robinson 70 mins), Curran (sub Paton 60 mins).

Subs not used: Thompson, Buckley.
