As the Under-21s bring their league campaign to a close this Monday night, coach Damien Johnson has been delighted with his young side this season.

A point for the blue and whites against Aston Villa at Leigh Sports Villa tonight will see Rovers secure a top-five finish and a place in the end of season promotion play-offs, something Johnson feels would be a great reward for their performances this term.

The development squad boss has been particularly impressed due to the youngsters battling on two fronts. As well as winning the last four league games to charge up the Under-21 Division 2 table, the majority of the squad have also played their part in Rovers reaching the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

"It is a good group," Johnson told Rovers PlayerHD. "But it has been difficult because a lot of the group has had to play in both the Under-18 FA Youth Cup and for the Under-21s in the league.

"They are playing against Chelsea on a Friday night and then we ask them to go again on the Monday.

"But all credit to them, it is testament to them that they can step up and go again and it would be a great reward for them if we were to get in the play-offs.

"But we want to do it in the right way and not just eke results out, it is the manner of how we do it and we want to do it right."
