Rovers Under-21 slipped to a narrow 2-1 Lancashire Senior Cup loss to Everton at Brockhall on Wednesday afternoon.
In what was an good competitive fixture, John O'Sullivan gave Rovers the lead just past the hour mark, but the visitors turned the game around with strikes from Courtney Dufus and David Henen to progress through to the semi-finals.
The first half was an even contest with both sides going close on a number of occasions.
Darragh Lenihan set the tone early on when he narrowly headed over an O'Sullivan free-kick, before Ryan Ledson tested David Raya with a long-range strike soon after.
Sacha Petshi was just over after a strong run into the box, whilst at the other end Harry Charlsey saw his near post shot kept out.
The best chance of the half fell Rovers way with the lively O'Sullivan the width of the post from giving the home side the lead. The Irishman's swerving shot beat Mateusz Hewelt in the Everton goal, but the ball slammed off the woodwork.
Henen blazed over after good work down the right, before a fine turn and shot from Anton Forrester deserved more but the ball only found the side-netting.
Rovers made a change at the break with Friday's matchwinner Lewis Mansell introduced for Willem Tomlinson, but it was the Toffees who enjoyed the better of the play in the second period.
Despite that it was the home side who took the lead on 64 minutes. O'Sullivan's goal-bound shot skimming off the head of Jonjoe Kenny to find the top corner of the net.
But less than 60 seconds later Everton were back on level terms. Poor anticipation of a ball into the area allowed substitute Courtney Dufus to pounce.
It very nearly got worse for Rovers when Scott Wharton underhit a back pass, but his blushes were spared by Raya who saved well to deny Callum Dyson.
But with the visitors posing more of a threat in the attacking third they grabbed a deserved winner seven minutes from time. Kenny's diagonal ball over the top was brilliantly controlled in his stride by Henen and he fired home beyond Raya.
Rovers huffed and puffed in the closing stages to find a way back into the tie, but they failed to test Hewelt in the Everton goal as the Merseyside club saw the game out comfortably to reach the last four of the competition.
