Thea Mallett hit a hat-trick, as Rovers Ladies cruised into the semi-finals of the Lancashire FA Womens Challenge Cup with an 11-0 victory over Penwortham Girls.

The holders scored four times in the first-half and seven in the second, on a comfortable afternoon for Gemma Donnelly's side.

After Lynda Shepherd had rattled the bar early on, Rovers opened the scoring midway through the first half when Alex Taylor drove into the box and pulled the ball back to Mallett, who tapped home.

Rovers had to wait until the 41st minute for their second - debutant Ella Toone with a driving run and fine finish from 16 yards out.

Less than a minute later and it was 3-0, as Mallett scored her second of the game after Georgia Lambe's initial shot had been saved by the keeper, and Lambe then added a fourth on the stroke of half-time, finishing off from close range after another Toone burst into the box.

The fifth goal arrived just past the hour mark, as Lambe fired home her second from a tight angle, before substitute Abbie Bennett found the back of the net from 10 yards out moments later.

Toone set up Natasha Fenton for Rovers' seventh on 69 minutes, before the 16-year-old grabbed her second of the game from just inside the area nine minutes later.

Captain Amie Fleming fired Rovers further ahead with a 25-yard shot that went in off the underside of the bar, before Mallett completed her hat-trick, sliding the ball under the keeper, to make it a perfect 10.

Fenton fired home her second and Rovers' 11th to complete the rout in the final minute.

A delighted Donnelly said: "It was a pleasing run-out for the girls. Given our injury problems, we had a mix of first team and reserve team players, and they produced a really positive performance.

"You've got to be happy with scoring 11 goals, not conceding and moving forwards to the semi-final of the cup, which is a competition we are very proud to be involved in.

"In terms of standout performances, it was nice to see Ella Toone join the Ladies ranks and she had a positive impact on the game, and it was the first opportunity I've had to observe Dan Lea since I signed her and I was really pleased with her contribution."
