Clean sheets give everyone the confidence

12 March 2015

Boss Gary Bowyer was delighted with his side's defensive solidity in the 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.

Victory on Wednesday night, thanks to Jordan Rhodes' last-gasp winner, means Rovers have now kept three clean sheets in their last four matches.

Rovers have struggled to shut teams out at the back this season, so the improvement defensively is very pleasing for the manager.

"It has been something that we have been talking about for a long time," Bowyer told Radio Rovers.

"So for us now to have had three out of our last four it gives everybody a boost and a massive confidence and rightly so.

"The lads are working ever so hard, everybody that was in the ground saw what a shift they put in off the back of Sunday's magnificent performance."

The reason Rovers were able to claim the win over Wanderers was in no small part down to the goalkeeping heroics of Jason Steele.

The former Middlesbrough man made four important stops to keep the Trotters at bay to allow Rovers to win the game late.

"They were terrific saves," added the Rovers boss. "He made a fabulous save from Craig Davies and the free-kick from Le Fondre as well.

"He is in a rich vein of form right now but he knows that Simon Eastwood is pushing him.

"So the competition is great, it is what we want."

Bowyer was also delighted with the display from young defender Doneil Henry.

The 21-year-old, who joined the club on loan from West Ham United last week, made his first home start yesterday evening, and didn't disappoint.

Bowyer said: "He had a hell of debut last week against Sheffield Wednesday against big Nuhiu.

"Then he's up against Emile Heskey who is a fantastic player and has a wealth of experience.

"He grew into the game massively and you see the tackles that he is making.

"And then for him to go up the other end and stick his head on it, it was a fantastic header, in fact he nearly scored from one earlier.

"We are delighted with his progress."

Rovers are back in action this weekend when they take on Charlton Athletic at the Valley.
