Knaresborough 0 Rovers u21s 4

20 July 2015

Rovers Under-21s got amongst the goals once more in their second pre-season match of the summer.

After their 5-1 win over Burscough last weekend, the development squad followed that up with a 4-0 victory over Knaresborough Town on Saturday.

Last year's match between the two sides was a nine-goal thriller and it looked to be heading the same way when Rovers raced into a 4-0 half-time lead at Manse Lane, but the scoreline wasn't troubled further on a comfortable afternoon for Damien Johnson's young squad.

It took just eight minutes for Rovers to open the scoring against the Northern Counties League side, striker Jordan Preston following up his goal last week by notching once more, beating the Knaresborough offside trap to finish well when through on goal.

Ten minutes later and the visitors doubled their advantage. Devarn Green cutting inside to let fly with a fine left-footed strike.

It was 3-0 just past the half hour thanks to trialist Menelik Chaka. The young German taking advantage of some hesitancy by the Knaresborough goalkeeper to close him down and cooly slot home.

The game was effectively over just before the break when Rovers added a fourth. Excellent play by Preston saw him play Green in and the wide-man fired home his second of the match.

There was less fluidity to the play in the second half due to a host of substitutions, and although both sides struck the woodwork, neither side added further goals.

Academy full-back Matty Makinson slammed an effort against the frame of the goal for Rovers, before Knaresborough's Jim Bradley did likewise in the closing stages.

Speaking after the match Under-21s lead coach Damien Johnson said: "Myself and John are pretty pleased. The conditions weren't great but the boys dealt with them and did okay.

"The majority of the lads all got sixty minutes under their belts and there are no injuries so we are happy with that.

"We now need to step it up in terms of the quality of our play, I think the next few games will provide the sterner test that we need."
