Rovers Under-21s got their pre-season off to an impressive start with a 5-1 win over Burscough on Saturday.
Damien Johnson's side easily defeated the Northern Premier League Division One outfit with a confident display at Victoria Park.
After Willem Tomlinson had served notice with a sweetly struck shot that rattled the crossbar, Rovers took the lead just past the midway point of the first half when Luke Wall slammed home a centre from Devarn Green.
The lead was doubled eight minutes before the break when a square pass from Lewis Mansell picked out Green and he unerringly found the bottom corner of the net with a fine strike.
Rovers made a host of changes at the break but it didn't affect their momentum as the second half had barely got underway when a third goal was added.
Jordan Preston's effort was only parried by former Rovers keeper Seb Usai, but Dean Rittenberg was on hand to tap home the rebound from close-range.
Preston then got on the scoresheet himself to make it 4-0 to the Rovers, stroking the ball home after good work from Ramirez Howarth, before Rittenberg grabbed his second of the match, capitalising on a poor back pass to lob Usai.
And although Rovers' copybook was blotted in the closing stages as the home side scored a consolation goal through John Connolly, it couldn't take the shine off what was an excellent first outing of the summer.
"It was very pleasing," said lead coach Damien Johnson. "We asked them to carry on the intensity that they had shown in training and they did that.
"The squad was full of scholars - including four first year players - with all getting valuable minutes under their belts.
"The quality of the goals was of a high standard, myself and John Filan were really pleased.
"It was just disappointing that they couldn't see the game out and keep a clean sheet as their efforts deserved that."
