Gary Bowyer was delighted with the way his young side performed as they defeated Tranmere Rovers 2-0 on Friday evening.
With the friendly match against Oldham Athletic taking place this afternoon, and several stars carrying knocks, the Rovers' squad featured many players from the Under-21 set-up.
Trialist Jeffrey Sarpong, one of three trialists on show for the visitors at Prenton Park, opened the scoring for Rovers with 14 minutes to go, before substitute Connor Mahoney doubled the visitors advantage with a fine strike five minutes later.
“I think we had a very good work-out,” said the Rovers boss.
“We had some injuries on Thursday and Friday and we didn’t want to risk the players, so we decided to come with a very youthful side here but we knew it would be a great test for them against a very good Tranmere team.
“Gary Brabin has very quickly assembled a good team and it was a great test for our lads.
“I’m delighted for them because there were a couple of trialist boys playing, the rest were all under 21 and I thought they applied themselves very well and towards the end they showed signs of dominating it."
New signing Sacha Petshi was also given a runout on Merseyside, coming through his first 90 minutes for the club.
Bowyer added: “I was pleased with Sacha, to get 90 minutes under his belt was really good and he showed signs that he’s getting stronger and better, and he has done ever since he’s been with us, day by day.
“He still needs a proper pre-season but he’s getting stronger.”
