Rovers u18s 3 Wolves u18s 1

12 January 2015

Rovers Under-18s kicked off the new year with a victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Wins have been hard to come by for the young Rovers this season, but they were comfortable victors at a wet and windy Brockhall.

First half goals from Luke Wall and Willem Tomlinson put Brian Carey's side in control, with Modou Cham stretching their advantage early in the second half.

Rovers had to withstand late pressure from the visitors and although Wolves did pull a goal back, it proved to be mere consolation.

The home side were on the front foot from the off, taking the game to their opponents, winning a series of corners and free-kicks.

The deadlock was eventually broken 35 minutes. A Wolves free-kick into the area was cleared, Rovers broke quickly, passing their way upfield before Luke Wall fired home.

Two minutes before the break Rovers' advantage was doubled, a ball into the box was cleared only as far as Willem Tomlinson and the midfielder struck a fine shot on the half-volley that flew into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Rovers continued their attacking intent into the second half and a third goal duly arrived on 50 minutes.

Good wing play by Wall saw the forward beat his man down the left, and although the Wolves stopper saved his effort at goal, he was powerless to stop Modou Cham from gleefully snapping up the rebound.

Wolves made a couple of substitutions in an attempt to wrestle the momentum from Rovers and they started to cause the home side problems defensively. Eventually they pulled a goal back from a corner kick that Rovers failed to clear.

The visitors put Rovers under further pressure as the clock ticked down but they were able to see out the remaining minutes to start 2015 with a very welcome three points.

"It was pleasing that the lads dominated in the first half and defended well when they had to in the second," said Carey.

"I'm am pleased with the performance more than anything, and delighted to get the result.

"It is a good start to the new year for them and hopefully it will continue."
