The Academy were left to rue missed chances and slack defending as they slipped to a 2-1 loss at home to Derby County on Tuesday afternoon.
After a goalless first half, Lewis Mansell scored his second goal in succession to put Rovers in front, but two goals from the visitors saw them leave Brockhall with all three points.
Rovers started the match strongly, dominating their opponents, but a lack of quality when it counted meant that the game was level at the break.
On the hour Rovers took the lead. A Modou Cham corner kick wasn't held by the Rams goalkeeper and Mansell was on hand to force the ball over the line.
Derby responded straight away when a failed clearance from the home side allowed Mo Adams to run through to score.
The game became stretched as it entered the latter stages with both sides having opportunities.
Alas it was the Rams who grabbed the all-important second goal, catching Rovers on the break, with Offrande Zanzala applying the finishing touch after the initial shot was saved.
"There are a lot of positives to take from the game," said coach Brian Carey. "There were a lot of good performances overall.
"It was a typical Academy game between two competitive sides."
