The saying that 'if you’re old enough, you’re good enough' has taken on a whole new meaning after the unveiling of exciting plans to launch a Blackburn Rovers over 50s team.

Blackburn Rovers Community Trust are delivering walking football sessions for anyone aged 50 or over as part of the £225,000 Sport England-funded ‘Motivate!’ campaign, and the concept has now been extended to include a representative side that will proudly pull on the famous blue and white halves.

Supporters meeting the age criteria can put themselves into contention for selection by attending the free* sessions at the Blackburn Rovers Indoor Centre every Friday evening from 6pm to 7pm.

The hour-long activity is led by Billy Legg, the former Huddersfield Town star of the 1960s and partner in crime of the legendary Frank Worthington. He offers a great mix of coaching, tactics and camaraderie for those looking to improve their game or their socialising!

The ultimate goal is to find a group of players worthy of becoming Blackburn Rovers’ oldest team and represent us against near neighbours such as Preston North End and Accrington Stanley who have just formed their own walking football sides. Initial friendly fixtures against local opposition will be played in the new year.

Players wishing to find out more about the Friday night football fix for the over 50s are welcome to contact Adrian Ward on 01254 508256 via email at, download the application form, or simply turn up on the night and fill out an application form to get started.

As an added bonus, the first 20 players to arrive at the session next Friday, 11th December, will each also be awarded with a free ticket for that night’s Championship clash with Rotherham United (kick-off 7.45pm).

*The first five sessions attended are free, with any subsequent weeks charged at £2 each.
