Rovers' Under-18s claimed their fifth away win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

Stefan Mols and former United youngster Joe Rankin-Costello were amongst the goals once more as Billy Barr's young side triumphed.

It was an inexperienced squad that made the trip to Carrington, with seven Academy first years starting and four Under-16s on the bench, but they put in a strong display to claim the points.

After an even opening Rovers got their noses in front on 25 minutes. Mason Fawns' fantastic free-kick picked out an unmarked Mols and he cooly headed home.

Fawns very nearly doubled the visitors' advantage soon afterwards following good work on the edge of the box, but the attacker snatched at his chance and it only found the side-netting.

Rovers continued on the front foot in the second half with Ramirez Howarth going close, but the home side were awarded a penalty on 64 minutes from a handball in the area.

Callum Gribbin took the spot kick, but Rovers keeper Andy Fisher saved well.

Then on 80 it was Rovers' turn to be given a spot kick. The referee had warned the players about shirt-pulling in the penalty box, and as the corner was sent over, the referee pointed to the spot after Tyler Magloire had been impeded.

Rankin-Costello stepped up and made no mistake to double Rovers' advantage.

The closing stages saw the team in blue and white create further chances. Full back Jan Pirretas going close with a drive after a strong run, whilst Fawns, who could have had a hat-trick on another day, hit the crossbar.

"It was a pleasing result for the lads," said Barr. "We were a really young side but came away with a really good result that was fully deserved.

"If our link play and our final pass had been better then we could have been looking at a bigger scoreline.

"So there is plenty to work on, we know we can be better, the lads have admitted that, but it is always nice to go to Man Utd and win."
