Rovers Under-21s slipped to a narrow 1-0 loss away at West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening.
A penalty at the end of the first half from Samir Nabi proved to be the difference between the two teams on a night where Damien Johnson's side had more than enough chances to get something from the game.
Rovers set the tone early on with David Carson firing wide from inside the area, before the midfielder saw another effort sensationally kept out from point-blank range by Baggies goalkeeper Ethan Ross.
The visitors continued to create the better opportunities, Connor Mahoney heading a Willem Tomlinson centre wide when well placed, yet it was West Brom who opened the scoring six minutes before the break from the penalty spot.
Rovers defender Mark Edgar was adjudged to have brought down Albion forward Tahvon Campbell in the box and Nabi stepped up to score with Ryan Crump diving in the opposite direction.
Nabi could then have doubled the home side's advantage but his 25-yard strike curled just beyond the far post, before Rovers missed the chance to make it all square at the break as Tomlinson fired wide of goal.
The early stages of the second half saw Crump save well from Nabi, with defender Jack Fitzwater wasteful on the follow-up, before Mahoney fired wide and Ross denied Tomlinson from distance.
Rovers continued to force the Baggies backwards but were left frustrated in front of goal. Mahoney again unable to find the target with a powerful effort, fellow winger Devarn Green doing likewise five minutes from time.
However the home side held on to maintain their 100% start to the season and to leave the Rovers scratching their heads wondering how they didn't get something from the game.
