Keeping his keeper options open

21 April 2015

Gary Bowyer will use the last three games of the campaign to run the rule over each of his goalkeeping options.

The manager has admitted that he'll play Simon Eastwood, David Raya and Jason Steele in the remaining games to throw the number one jersey out for one of them to grab for next season.

Steele has featured between the posts in the majority of Rovers games since joining from Middlesbrough, whilst Eastwood has been the goalkeeping option for the FA Cup and the league matches since then. Third choice David Raya made his debut in the league win over Leeds United at the beginning of the month.

So the manager will take the opportunity in these last three games of the season to give each of them a go.

"I will have a further look in the final three games at all three goalkeepers," said the Rovers boss.

"I want to have a look again at David Raya, so he will feature at some point in the next three games.

"Jason Steele has been very good, he's understood that Simon Eastwood played in the cup and straight away he was back in.

"He also understood that we wanted to have a closer look at Easty over the last couple of games. Easty has only played in one game that we've lost and that was Liverpool. So from his point of view the record stands ever so good for him.

"Opportunity knocked for David at Leeds with Easty being injured and I thought he looked very accomplished. His performances for the Under-21s, when he has been out on loan, and in training with us have been very very good.

"He has stated the case and the other two now know that he is breathing down their necks. I'll have another look at him before the end of the season, because it is is the right thing to do.

"It is the competition that we want. I'll have the summer to contemplate and see which way we'll go with it."
