Debut delight for David

David Raya had a day to remember as Rovers swept aside Leeds United 3-0 at Elland Road.

The young goalkeeper could have been forgiven for nerves as he was handed his first start in a Rovers shirt, but he didn't disappoint with a calm and composed performance as goals from Tom Cairney, Jordan Rhodes and Jay Spearing saw Rovers triumph on their travels.

Raya didn't have long to prepare for his debut after only finding out he was starting on the morning of the game, but it was an enjoyable afternoon for the Academy graduate.

"I found out I was playing in the morning before the team meeting so it was a great feeling," said the 19-year-old.

"It was better this way making your debut, because if you knew overnight then maybe you'd have a bad night.

"I felt really good, the lads were compact, it is a great result and a great clean sheet.

"It is the chance I've been waiting for since I moved to the first team, I've played today so the next level is to carry on playing."

The only disappointment for Raya was that his family weren't able to get over from Spain in time to see him in action.

"I'll speak to my parents and my brothers to tell them what happend," added the keeper. "They couldn't watch the game today, with me only finding out in the morning they couldn't get a plane to come here, but I'm sure they will come another time."

Unfortunately he won't be involved in Wednesday night's FA Cup quarter-final replay against Liverpool at Ewood Park as he is cup-tied having already played in the competition whilst on loan at Southport, but the Spaniard will be cheering Rovers on from the sidelines.

"I'll be in the stand watching it because I played against Derby for Southport before, so hopefully we'll get the win and go to Wembley," added Raya.

Tickets for the FA Cup replay are currently on sale to all Rovers fans with a database history of purchasing tickets to Rovers matches.
