Differing fortunes for Rovers stars

8 September 2014

Two of Rovers international stars experienced differing fortunes in their opening Euro 2016 qualifying matches.

Grant Hanley’s Scotland slipped to narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of world champions Germany in Dortmund.

The Rovers captain played the full 90 minutes in the Scots first loss in over a year.

Scotland fell behind early on to a Thomas Muller goal, but were back on level terms mid-way through the second-half when Ikechi Anya converted.

However, their joy was short lived as Muller added a second minutes later and Charlie Mulgrew was shown red in stoppage time.

Meanwhile, Rovers midfielder Corry Evans helped Northern Ireland to a priceless victory in Hungary – their first away win in four years.

Hungary’s Tamas Priskin opened the scoring with 15 minutes to go, but Michael O’Neill’s side got their rewards with two late goals from Niall McGinn and Kyle Lafferty earning a deserved win.
