Rovers u21s 0 Man Utd u21s 5

25 November 2014

Chris Brown made his first competitive outing for Rovers but it was Manchester United who progressed through to the semi-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

The striker played just under an hour at Leigh Sports Village, however it was the visitors' forwards who had the upper hand as they ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

With a strong side at their disposal United started brightly, Will Keane opening the scoring after 16 minutes before Ander Herrera doubled their advantage just before the half hour.

Anders Lindegaard had denied Rovers attacker Devarn Green on two occasions, but a third United goal arrived just before the break from Andreas Pereira to put the Red Devils firmly in control.

Aside from a Connor Mahoney free-kick that was saved, Rovers offered little as an attacking force in the second half. Substitute Josh Rothwell scoring twice to ensure it would be United who will face Wigan Athletic in the last four of the competition.

Both sides named strong line-ups for the Senior Cup clash. Chris Brown, Chris Taylor, Yann Songo'o and Adam Henley the experience for Rovers, whilst United called upon Anders Lindegaard, Jonny Evans, Adnan Januzaj and Ander Herrera in their starting XI.

The visitors set the tone as early as the first minute with Rovers goalkeeper Ryan Crump called into action to save at his near post to deny Will Keane.

Rovers responded well with Devarn Green seeing a volley tipped over by Anders Lindegaard, but just past the quarter hour Manchester United opened the scoring.

Full back Saidy Janko charged down the right behind the Rovers defence and he squared the ball for Keane to finish comfortably in front of goal.

Rovers again rallied with Lindegaard saving low from Green, then only a last-ditch block from United captain Tom Thorpe prevented Chris Brown from getting on the scoresheet from Green's cutback.

But after that brief flurry of Rovers chances the play was firmly towards the opposing area. A second goal arrived for the visitors on 27 minutes when a Januzaj free-kick from the right was swept home by £29m summer signing Herrera.

Crump saved further efforts from Januzaj and Herrera, but was powerless to prevent a third goal being added three minutes before the break.

United midfielder Andreas Pereira was given far too much time and space in possession and he took full advantage by finishing off his strong run by lashing the ball into the far corner of the net.

As play resumed in the second half United midfielder Ander Herrera saw a couple of sighters flash wide but it wouldn't be long a fourth goal duly arrived.

Excellent close control from Januzaj saw United advance unchecked into the area and as the ball was switched across, first half substitute Joe Rothwell swept the ball into the roof of the net.

Chris Brown came through 51 minutes on his return to action, but aside from the first half shot that was blocked, he was rarely involved such was the dominance from the side in red.

A second change was made soon afterwards with 16-year-old debutant Ryan Nyambe making way for Jack Doyle. The young defender didn't let anyone down on his first outing for the development squad against the much stronger opposition.

The only notable chance for Rovers in the second half stemmed from a strong run from Connor Mahoney. The midfielder saw his run end prematurely on the edge of the box, but from the resulting free-kick the England youth international could only find the gloves of Lindegaard with his effort.

With United in control Rovers struggled to gain any forward momentum, with the visitors adding a fifth ten minutes from time when Josh Rothwell grabbed his second of the game with a fine finish.

United ended the match with ten men as an injury to captain Tom Thorpe meant he was unable to see out the final ten minutes, but the Reds backline was rarely troubled as they saw the game out comfortably.
