Report: Brighton 1 Rovers 1

Rudy Gestede rescued a point for Rovers in a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

It was a second draw in five days as the Rovers striker bagged his 10th goal of the campaign five minutes into the second half.

Christian Walton somehow thwarted Tom Cairney after eight minutes, clawing the ball away from the head of the midfielder when it seemed certain that he'd head Rovers in front.

However, it was the hosts who lead after a scrappy first half. Gary Gardner firing home just before the break from Jake Forster-Caskey's corner kick.

Rovers needed a response and it arrived just five minutes into the second half. Markus Olsson whipping a ball to the edge of the box for Rudy Gestede to power a header in off the crossbar.

Grant Hanley went close to getting his second of the season but put his header just wide, whilst Jason Steele saved late to deny Albion defender Joe Bennett.

Another point on their travels means Rovers go into the break increasing their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Rovers made just the one change from the side that drew 2-2 with Millwall in midweek.

Fit again Lee Williamson returned to the starting XI with Jordan Rhodes the man to drop to the bench.

The Seagulls also made one change from their 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday as Rohan Ince replaced Joao Teixeira.

It was a scrappy first half on the south coast with chances few and far between.

Rovers should have taken the lead inside eight minutes when a Ben Marshall cross looped off Brighton captain Gordon Greer, but with Tom Cairney almost certain to head home, keeper Christian Walton got his hand to the ball to claw it away.

Injuries and bookings were the order of the day as play was very much stop-start, Both Cairney and Grant Hanley needed treatment, whilst Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Corry Evans all saw yellow.

Sam Baldock shot weekly at Jason Steele, whilst Ben Marshall bent a free-kick a couple of yards wide.

But as the game appeared to be drifting towards the break the home side grabbed the opening goal of the game.

As Markus Olsson challenged Inigo Calderon for the ball, it came back off the Brighton defender, but a corner kick was rewarded.

From Jake Forster-Caskey's 42nd minute kick the ball somehow ran through to Gary Gardner and the midfielder swept it home a the back post with a first time effort.

Rovers huffed and puffed but it was the hosts who could have doubled their advantage before half-time, Hanley having to clear a Baldock shot across the box.

The Seagulls tried their luck with a couple of long-range sighters as the second half got underway. Jason Steele easily behind efforts from Gardner and Forster-Caskey.

But it was Rovers who grabbed the all-important next goal to draw the visitors level on 51 minutes.

Rudy Gestede saw a shot blocked but as Rovers maintained the momentum, Markus Olsson swept the ball back into the box to where the big man powered a header that crashed down off the bar and spun back into the net.

Rovers continued to press as they looked to grab their second of the game, Grant Hanley heading just wide after a spell of sustained pressure, whilst a low shot from Gestede was claimed by Walton in the Albion goal.

It wasn't until late in the game that the Seagulls exerted any pressure on the Rovers back line. Gordon Greer headed an Elliott Bennett free-kick wide, before Jason Steele saved well from Joe Bennett after Shane Duffy had brilliantly blocked a shot from Paddy McCourt.

So Rovers go into the international break with their unbeaten run intact, they'll be wanting to stretch that to eight when Leeds United visit Ewood Park in two weeks time.
