Sophie Flynn scored a hat-trick as Rovers Ladies cruised into the last four of the Lancashire FA Womens Challenge Cup courtesy of a 10-0 victory over Bury.
Karen Boyle, Katie Anderton and Amie Fleming also bagged braces, as Gemma Donnelly’s side booked a semi-final showdown with local rivals Preston North End.
Rovers raced into a four-goal lead inside the quarter-hour mark and never looked back.
Boyle got the ball rolling with the opener on eight minutes, before Flynn fired home her first of the afternoon shortly after.
Boyle then scored her second moments later, before Anderton added the hosts’ fourth.
A serious knee injury to Sophia Riccio then disrupted Rovers’ rhythm, as Bury held out until the break.
Rovers regained control after the interval, with Anderton adding a fifth with a clever lob over the keeper, before Flynn netted a quickfire double to complete her hat-trick.
Fleming fired home the eighth and Danielle Sheen scored the ninth, before the Rovers captain completed the rout with a screamer late on.
Manager Gemma Donnelly said: “It was a typical county cup tie against lower league opposition, but I’ve got to give Bury credit.
“It was a pleasing run-out from our point of view and we’re delighted to progress through to the semi-finals, where we will meet Preston, who beat us in the final last year. However, we are disappointed to pick up an injury, which will rule Sophia out for some time.
“The players were clinical and retained possession well, amidst an afternoon of interruptions. We were pleased not to concede and to have a multitude of names on the scoresheet. It wasn’t ideal preparation going into a Premier League Cup tie away to Sheffield on Sunday, so I am looking forward to a purposeful week of training ahead of that game.”
Rovers will be at home to Preston North End in the next round of the Lancashire Cup, which will take place at AFC Darwen on Sunday January 18th. The other semi-final sees Morecambe host Chorley.
