Eric Kinder was impressed with the performance of young defender Ryan Nyambe in Tuesday's Lancashire Senior Cup match with Manchester United.
The 16-year-old full back was handed his debut for the development squad and didn't let anyone down on an otherwise difficult night for Rovers.
Kinder's side were no match for the expensively assembled United squad, but the boss was delighted to be able to give Nyambe his chance.
"I've been quite impressed with him when I've seen him play for the Under-18s this season," said the Under-21s coach.
"There was an opportunity to bring him up during the week to have a quick look at him and he ended up training with the first team.
"Reports came back from the first team that he did ever so well so we thought lets throw him in.
"Whether we've been fair on him throwing him in at the deep end against Manchester United and the types of players they had out I don't know, but I thought he acquitted himself very well.
"I don't know Ryan that well, but I would think if I was his age and I was thrown in, then I'd want more of that and I'd be desperately working hard to make sure I was part of the Under-21s."
The Under-21s are back in league action this coming Monday evening when they take on Newcastle United at Leigh Sports Village, kick-off 7.00pm.
Season ticket holders can see the game for free on production of their season ticket card. General admission prices are £4 adults, £2 concessions.
