Ladies look to finish on a high

14 May 2014

Rovers Ladies conclude their Premier League programme away to local rivals Preston North End this evening.

After a turbulent and transitional season, Gemma Donnelly’s side will be hoping to end the campaign on a high.

Rovers have a score to settle with Preston, having lost twice to them already this season – including a narrow defeat in the final of the Lancashire FA Womens Challenge Cup.

Having secured their Premier League status on Sunday, Donnelly is urging her young side to show what they can do, before they head into the summer break.

“Tonight gives us an opportunity to experiment with team selection, although we have done that throughout the season given the inconsistency in personnel,” said the interim manager.

“All the pressure will be on Preston, who are hoping to achieve a second-place finish in the league. Therefore, we go into the game as underdogs, which we are anyway given that they have beaten us twice already this season.

“So it is an opportunity for the players to enjoy their football in a pressure-free environment. However, this doesn’t mean that we’re going there just to make up the numbers. We still want to put in a performance worthy of winning the match and I hope the reaction I get from the players is similar to the Reading and Derby fixtures, where the characters in the team really stood up.

“Our aim is to wrap the season up in style and demonstrate the real quality we have within the team. Given that it’s the last game, the girls will have a point to prove, as they will want to reconfirm their place in the squad for next season.

“Tonight’s game will see a final inclusion for Helen Seed, Steph Hardy and Rio Hardy, who have all achieved scholarships in the United States starting later this year. We thank them for their efforts this season and during the Centre of Excellence days, and wish them all the best.”

Kick-off at the UCLan Sports Arena is at 7.30pm. For live updates, follow @RoversLadies on Twitter.
