A family of Rovers fans, who are celebrating 100 years of supporting the club, are the latest lucky winners of a Golden Ticket!
The Wilkinson family, from Hoghton, have been awarded a free season ticket for the upcoming Championship campaign by Rovers’ owner Madam Desai in recognition of their long-serving support.
The family were nominated for the special prize by Millie Costley, whose late great-grandad Matt first started supporting Rovers in 1914 and was ‘errand lad’ for the great David Rollo, a Northern Ireland full-back.
Her granddad, Jim, 77, has been a season ticket holder since the end of World War II, whilst her mum, Lesley, and step-dad, Jim, met in 1980 on a coach to Exeter to watch Rovers in the old Third Division.
Lesley, 49, started going home and away when she was a schoolgirl in her teens and once came back from West Ham on the team coach as the supporters’ bus had broken down and then-manager Howard Kendall allowed all the young fans to come back with the team!
Step-dad Jim, 55, has been a fan since the early 1960s and has been everywhere in Britain and Europe watching Rovers. When Jim and Lesley got married in 2004, the wedding and honeymoon were arranged around a trip to Washington DC to take in a Rovers friendly.
The latest member of the family to carry on the tradition is Millie’s sister, Olivia, 10, who is already a season ticket holder and was team mascot at Turf Moor last season.
With a century of supporting Rovers already behind them, the Wilkinson/Costley family are set for many more decades in blue-and-white halves yet!
Millie said: “I want to say a big thank you to Blackburn Rovers – what a lovely idea this has been. It really shows a lot of loyalty to the fans! We’re all really looking forward to the new season – come on you Blues!”
The club are giving away 20 Golden Tickets for the 2014-15 Championship season to celebrate the 20 anniversary of Rovers’ Premiership title triumph in 1995.
Only a few remain ... details of how to get your hands on the final one will be announced tomorrow (Sunday)!
