Walsh treble secures semi-final spot

13 February 2014

Rovers’ Centre of Excellence Under-17s hit Sunderland for six to book their place in the last four of the FA Girls Youth Cup.

Following penalty shoot-out victories away to North Yorkshire and Aston Villa in the opening two rounds, Rovers made home advantage count, as they romped to a superb 6-0 win.

Leading 1-0 at the break, Rovers produced a five-star performance after the interval to secure a semi-final spot.

The hosts opened the scoring midway through the first half when the Sunderland stopper rushed off her line to block Georgia Lambe’s shot and Natasha Fenton fired in the rebound from the edge of the box.

Keira Walsh then netted a 13-minute hat-trick to put the game to bed. She unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard shot on 48 minutes, before converting a cross moments later. The England Under-19 international completed her hat-trick just past the hour mark with a stunning strike that curled into the top corner.

Aisha Yallop maintained her record of scoring in every round with a well taken goal, one-on-one with the keeper, on 66 minutes, before Hannah Godfrey sealed a fine individual display on 75 minutes, heading home Walsh’s corner.

Head coach Matt Johnson said: “It was exciting to watch a great attacking team performance in tough conditions. It’s testimony to the girls that the club has now reached the semi-finals of the national Youth Cup two years in succession.”

Rovers were runners-up in the prestigious Youth Cup competition last season, losing 3-1 to Arsenal in the final, and they will be looking to go one better this time around.
