Mud, sweat and cheers for Phil!

Leaping flames, barbed wire barricades, thick mud and freezing waters were no match for Academy coach Phil Greenwood, who successfully tackled this year’s Tough Guy – and all for a good cause!

Phil was one of around 7,000 people to take on the extreme event, completing the course in three hours and 30 minutes.

The annual Tough Guy challenge, which takes place at South Perton Farm in Wolverhampton, pushes its competitors to the limit and is widely seen as one of the toughest assault courses in the world.

Those that took part waded through freezing cold water up to their necks, as well as crawling under barbed wire, running through burning bales of hay and taking on high rope challenges – all as winds howled and rain fell.

Fundraiser Phil, who is Lead Sport Science & Conditioning Coach at the Academy, was delighted to make it round – at the second time of asking!

He said: “The race is always held on the last weekend in January, whatever the weather. I took on the challenge last year, raising money for Help for Heroes, however unfortunately I was one of the one third of competitors that don’t finish each year as my legs completely cramped with about 2km to go. 

“The temperature last year was well below freezing, with all the water sections completely frozen before the race started. Divers – in dry suits – had to go in and break it all up! 

“I decided that I had to have another go this year, mainly out of thanks to everyone who kindly donated – and also personal pride – so last Sunday I took on the torture again!

“The temperature was much warmer (4oC!) and I modified my nutrition strategy this year and managed to complete it. The worst bits were being totally submerged repeatedly in freezing cold water, however unlike last year there weren’t any blocks of ice, and crawling under barbed wire for 30m. The last 1km was tough and cramp started to set in again, but I survived the last few challenges.

“I won’t be doing it again, but I’m already thinking about what challenge to take on next.”
