Under-21s boss Eric Kinder was far from impressed with his side's display as they lost 3-1 at home to Newcastle United on Monday night.
Rovers were second best on a disappointing evening at Leigh Sports Village, as goals from Gael Bigirimana, Callum Roberts and Jonathyn Quinn gave the Division 2 league leaders all three points.
Sam Lavelle had offered hope for Rovers when he made the scores 1-1 midway through the first half, but that was as good as it got for the home side in a poor performance from the development squad.
"I'm very disappointed," Kinder told Rovers Player. "We didn't get anywhere near the levels that we produced earlier on in the season.
"Whether they are getting a little bit tired as they are coming to the end of the first part of the season I don't know. But that is an excuse and we don't do excuses.
"It wasn't acceptable. We didn't do the basics right and if you don't do the basics right in a football match then you get beat.
"They did the basics better than we did, we made individual mistakes that cost us goals, you can't put in a performance like that and you can't defend a performance like that.
"I'm not having that, that is as poor as we have been."
The Under-21s return to action in a fortnight when they face Derby County at Ewood Park on Wednesday December 17th. Kick-off 7.00pm.
