A cup-tie to relish

8 December 2014

Academy coach Brian Carey hopes Rovers' Under-18s grasp the opportunity to perform on the big stage when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the 3rd round of the FA Youth Cup this evening.

The Under-18s coach felt that the side didn't do themselves justice in last season's competition as they went out at the same stage after losing 1-0 to Cardiff City.

"We were disappointed last year when were at Cardiff," said Carey. "There was a lot of hype and build-up to the game, but it didn't transpire into a performance.

"So this time it is important to turn up and have a go."

Carey knows it will be far from easy against a Spurs side riding high towards the top of their league group, but Rovers make the journey to the capital boosted by recent results, including a 2-2 draw with Manchester City last time out.

He is also able to add experience to the squad with Under-21 regulars Hyuga Tanner, Sam Lavelle, and Jack Doyle all eligible to feature tonight for Rovers at Dagenham.

"It is great that we are playing Tottenham and great that we are up against Premier League opposition," added the coach. "It is a game that we are really looking forward to.

"They are very tough opposition, I've been to see them and they are decent, so we'll have our work cut out in what I'm sure will be a difficult game.

"It is another excellent game for the lads to prove what they can do, and show what they are about."

Kick-off at the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium, Dagenham is at 7.00pm. Tickets will be available at the turnstiles on the day, priced at £5 for adults and £1 for concessions.
