Great experience for Rovers' youngsters

6 August 2014

Rovers Under-18s gained valuable experience on Tuesday evening with a match against Welsh Premier League side Bala Town.

In front of over 200 fans, David Lowe's side made it a great contest at Maes Tegid, eventually going down 3-1.

After an even opening, it was the home side who took the lead on 22 minutes, Mark Jones firing home from the the edge of the box.

Rovers hit back well with defender Matthew Platt equalising on the half hour, heading home Adrian Edo's centre.

However, just before the break the Lakesiders regained the lead, Mike Hayes scoring from a tight angle to ensure it was Bala who lead at the break.

The second half saw the Welsh side slowly gain the upper hand. The Rovers crossbar was rattled, whilst on another occasion the young side had to defend manfully in clearing off the line.

Six minutes from time Bala did add a third, one of their trialists scoring a spectacular effort from a late corner kick.

"Obviously we were up against older and stronger opponents - 16-year-olds verses 30-year-olds," said Lowe.

"But for an hour to 70 minutes it was a really good contest, we stayed in the game and played some decent football.

"Had we gone in at 1-1 it could have been different, but it was a great experience and some of our play was really good at times, played at a great high tempo."

ROVERS: Williams (sub Fisher 70 mins), Pirretas, Askew, Hardcastle (sub Man 78), Scott, Platt, Mansell (sub Mehew 46 mins), Edo, Howarth, Joel, Callaway (sub Grouse 68 mins).
